From London, Philippa Asher is one of a few Ashtanga yoga practitioners in the world (and the only British woman), to be Certified to teach the traditional Ashtanga yoga method, by Sri K Pattabhi Jois. She has learned the Primary, Intermediate, Advanced A and Advanced B Series directly from Guruji and Sharath (at the Krishna Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore, India) and shares the Ashtanga system internationally.
After a vocational ballet school training from age 12, and 25 years of studying and teaching dance at universities and ballet companies all over the UK, Philippa randomly walked into an Ashtanga yoga class in London. It was a life-changing incident that made complete sense.
From the late 1990s she began learning the Ashtanga system daily before work (in the media, film and music industries). For the last 16 years she has studied for several months each year at KPJAYI in Mysore, practising under the guidance of revered guru Sri K Pattabhi Jois and his grandson Sharath Jois.
In 2006, Philippa established and ran Triyoga Soho’s Ashtanga self-practice programme in London. She taught there for 5 years before moving to South India to build her own shala (on a coffee estate in Sakleshpur, in the Western Ghats). ASHTANGA NIRVṚTA is a stunning homestay yoga retreat which aims to bring Ashtanga yoga to all levels of practitioners, in nature.
As well as being the resident yoga teacher at ASHTANGA NIRVṚTA, Philippa also leads guest workshops at studios in India, Europe, London and on retreats worldwide. Her approach to sharing yoga asana (from beginners to more seasoned practitioners) is serious, yet light-hearted and joyful. Her emphasis is on good technique, safe alignment, the synchronisation of tristhana (breath, gaze points and movement) and passing on the exact method, as taught by Guruji.
Philippa’s dedicated passion for Ashtanga yoga, her background as a trained dancer and her experience as a qualified teacher (Post Graduate Certificate in the Education of Adults), gives her an intuitive and sound understanding of bodies, yoga asanas, people and how they learn.
Why we love Philippa
Philippa is one of the UK’s most advanced asana practitioners and ran a highly successful Mysore self practice programme in London for years. She is an incredibly skilled teacher who worked directly with Sri K Pattabhi Jois for many years and we love her very direct but incredibly warm and nurturing approach.
When is Philippa teaching at SYL?
Philippa Asher | 6 Day Ashtanga Yoga Intensive
Monday 1st – Saturday 6th October 2018
Location: Stillpoint Yoga Brixton, 41 – 43 Acre Lane
Brixton, SW2 5TN
Price for the intensive: £200
An opportunity to work closely and in a small group, with one of the few KPJAYI Certified Ashtanga yoga teachers, who has learned the Primary, Intermediate, Advanced A and B Series directly from Sri K Pattabhi Jois and his grandson Sharath at KPJAYI in Mysore, India.
From Monday 1st to Friday 5th there will be two Mysore-style Ashtanga guided self-practice sessions:
6.30am – 8.30am guided self-practice
8.30am – 10.30am guided self-practice
Then Saturday 6th the 2 groups will come together for the following:
10:00 – 12:00: Led Primary, followed by simple pranayama (both groups together)
13:00 – 15:00: Yoga philosophy and a Q&A
Following the traditional ‘guided self-practice’ method of learning/practising Ashtanga yoga, you will have the opportunity to deepen and develop your asana technique and practice, whilst being guided through methods of approaching the more challenging postures. You will be encouraged to transform your practice into a moving meditation and experience the joy of progressing serenely through the asanas, with humility and grace.
The final day will be a Led Primary class, followed by simple pranayama and then a yoga philosophy discussion and chance to ask questions about the method. 10 students in each group, for optimum guidance.
Working intensively with an experienced, qualified teacher (who can demonstrate accurately, assist effectively and precisely convey what a student needs, in order to execute a posture correctly), allows the practitioner to enjoy breakthroughs in their asana practice, resulting in the impossible becoming achievable.
Being skilled at reading bodies, Philippa is adept at working out what each individual needs to master, in order to accomplish the essence of each asana, with good alignment, strength, elegance and peace.
Perfect for beginners and established practitioners of the Primary, Intermediate, Advanced A or Advanced B Series, who are keen to devote a week in a small group, to honing in on the subtleties of the traditional Ashtanga practice, whilst receiving guidance on how to develop the asanas that they are currently working on.
