What you will learn:
The Half Primary Series
This groundbreaking course delivers the theory, names and postures behind the half primary series of the Ashtanga yoga practice. More importantly, the Essentials 1 course provides you with a comprehensive understanding of how Ashtanga yoga works and fits together. We also look at functional movement in relation to the sun salutations.
Yoga Philosophy - Eight Limbs
We will introduce the fundamental philosophical principles that underpin Ashtanga yoga, the eight limbed pathway from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. This philosophy is key to understanding how yoga begins to transform your life. Right from the start of the curriculum we ask you to consider how you move in the world as a response to your personal practice and study.
Breathing & Mindful Principles
The awareness of breath is key to developing a yoga practice that deepens as you practice more. Throughout the course we will be discussing and observing how establishing breathing and mindfulness principles encourage a long term and safe yoga practice. You will also have practices to take away with you that you can develop yourself over time.
What is the intention of the Essentials 1 course?
This is the first part of the Essentials 60hr Course aimed at those who wish to deepen their Ashtanga Primary Series practice in a holistic way. In this course you will develop a deeper relationship with the half primary series practice from the sun salutations through to Navasana. We will work on how it relates to your own body and include chanting, mindfulness meditation, breathwork and sanskrit counting. This course is for you to develop your own knowledge of the practice, it doesn’t include assisting others.
What is the course curriculum?
- We will explore the main principles of Ashtanga yoga, these being breath, bandha and drishti (the tristana method) observing how these subtle but powerful tools bring about balance and focus.
- We will explore the half primary Ashtanga yoga practice, from the sun salutations through to navasana and learn the Sanskrit vinyasa count for each posture, its Sanskrit name and subsequent drishti (looking place).
- We will begin to look at the philosophy of the eight limbs of yoga and see how they link to asana practice.
- We will look at basic pranayama and mindfulness practices.
- We will discover functional movement patterns in relationship to the sun salutations.
How long will the course take?
The course duration is 4 days with 24 contact hours of study. The course includes:
- 6 hours of content per day.
- A 3hr morning teacher/student Ashtanga yoga led half primary series. This creates a learning environment where together we unpack the many key elements of the practice.
- A 3hr afternoon technique/philosophy/movement session unpacking the deeper elements of yoga practice.
We will be providing a manual and pre-course study/learning tools. It is a requirement to attend 80% of the whole course.
Completion of this course qualifies you for the Essentials Part 2 course which can then lead on to the Experienced Practitioner Course.
How much does the course cost?
The course price is £350 (or £695 when booked with Essentials 2)
What do I need to know before joining the course?
This course is for all practitioners. However, you must be proficient in practising the Ashtanga half-primary series and have experience of both self-practice (Mysore style) and guided/led Ashtanga yoga methods. You must know how to count in Sanskrit numbers 1 – 28 and you will be given a pre-course instructional video to support this.
Who will be my course teacher?

Scott Johnson has over 17 years of experience with Ashtanga Yoga. He is the co-founder and director at Stillpoint Yoga London which he established in 2009. Scott has taught Ashtanga Yoga there almost daily since Stillpoint opened. He was introduced to the practice of Ashtanga yoga by John Scott in 2002 and has studied deeply with him, Lucy Crawford and Manju Jois since then, dedicating himself to the practice while working and raising a family.
Scott is co-founder and one of the directors of Amāyu Yoga (est. 2018), a first of its kind organisation dedicated to educating Ashtanga teachers around power dynamics and consent driven, student centred approaches to the teaching and practice of Ashtanga Yoga.
Scott teaches with encouragement, insight and integrity to the teachings of yoga and mindfulness that he has had access to. His deep love of the contemplative side of these practice creates a rich, nurturing environment and he is deeply dedicated to the healing power of yoga and mindfulness in the people that he is fortunate to meet. His devotion and dedication to these practices assists practitioners in discovering how contemplative practice can unfold not only personally on the mat, but also find meaning in the wider context of daily life.
