Anthony ‘Prem’ Carlisi

Anthony ‘Prem’ Carlisi has been practising and teaching ashtanga yoga for over 30 years. He learned directly fromK. Pattabhi Jois in 1978 for several months in Southern California. In 1979, he was amongst the first small group of Western students to go to Mysore, India. He was blessed with the rare opportunity to spend time in the most intimate settings from the very beginning of his yoga journey and has been back and forth to Mysore many times since then, staying for 1-6 months at a time.

Prem is considered one of the American pioneers of ashtanga yoga, along with David Williams, Nancy Gilgoff, David Swenson and Tim Miller. He was honored by K. Pattabhi Jois by being certified to teach the primary, intermediate and advanced series of ashtanga yoga in 1994.

In 1983 Prem met the world renowned Ayurvedic master, Dr. Vasant Lad and studied with him personally on a daily basis for 4 years at the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He has a thorough understanding of the principles of life and living according to the ancient science of Ayurveda from India. Prem incorporates these principles into all of his teachings.

Prem has been studying tantric techniques since 1990 and in 2007 he published his first book The Only Way Out Is In, a commentary on the synergy of the three life sciences of ashtanga yoga, Ayurveda and tantra.

Today Prem is blessed with having the Ashtanga Yoga Bali Research Center with his loving wife Radha. AYBRC is a culmination of the combined energy from both of their devoted practices and teachings of the traditional method of ashtanga yoga and the vedic science of Ayurveda, which over the years they have taught to thousands of students. He continues to show gratitude to be able to share all he has learned and all that he continues to learn.

Why we love Prem

We have been friends with Prem since before we opened in 2009 and he has been a great supporter of our work here at SYL. Prem has a depth of practice and experience that makes him a highly gifted, wise and articulate teacher of ashtanga yoga. His ability to unpack his 40 years practicing Ashtanga yoga is inspiring and profound. He is able to inspire many people to look deeper into their practices and find the seeds that inspire profound change in their lives.
